It’s that time of year again–the time when our favorite musicians compete to see who made the most moolah in the past year. Billboard just released their list of the Top 50 Money Makers of 2016. While there weren’t many surprises, it’s always a shock to see just how much these celebs (like Beyonce and Drake) are making.
Coming in at number one this year was, of course, Beyonce herself. Total, she pulled in $62.1 million last year. That’s $20 million more than the musicians in the number two slot (which we’ll get to in a moment). The majority of her money came from the Formation World Tour. That alone grossed $54.7 million, while other sales, streaming and publishing made up the rest.
Next up was Guns N’ Roses, who randomly reunited last year. This is probably the most surprising entry on the list considering nobody ever expected a reunion to happen. Still, their tour, which is still going, earned them over $40 million. Total, the rockers made $42.3 million last year.
In number three is someone who remains a constant favorite, Bruce Springsteen. Having a successful tour seems to be the key to success. Like the first two entries, the Boss made the majority of his $42.2 million off touring.
Drake is the first person on the list to change up the “touring=financial success” model. Yes, he made $13.6 million off touring, but the majority of his $37.3 million actually came from streaming. He ended up pulling in $18.1 million from his 6.8 billion streams.
Rounding out the top five is Adele, who sold 2.2 million albums in the U.S. last year. That’s more than any other artist besides Prince, so that’s saying something. Total, she earned $37.0 million.
The rest of the top ten include Coldplay, Justin Bieber, Luke Bryan, Kanye West and Kenny Chesney.
