Cricket may not have the following it deserves in the United States, but in many other parts of the world, it’s one of the most popular sports around. So if you haven’t heard the name Mithali Raj, you’re about to start seeing it pop up everywhere. The Indian cricket captain just became the lead ODI run-scorer in the world.
Raj captains the Indian Women’s cricket team and has done so for many years now. In fact, she made her One Day International debut all the way back in 1999, where she scored 114 runs, when she was just 16 years old.
All those runs have been racking up, too. In a game against Australia on Wednesday, Raj managed to bring her cumulative total runs to 6,028. This helped her pass up the former record holder Charlotte Edwards’ number of 5,992.
Edwards retired from the England team back in 2016, so she won’t be gaining on Raj’s numbers. However, she had nothing but praise for her competitor.
“I don’t think Mithali Raj gets the credit she deserves at times,” Edwards said. “She is a quality player. The big hitters get the plaudits, but to average over 50 in ODI cricket is an outstanding achievement.”
That’s a reference to Raj’s incredible 51.52 average. Not too shabby.
