Fan Favorite: Ellen DeGeneres Wins 20th People’s Choice Award

The people have spoken: Ellen DeGeneres is the best celebrity ever. Last night at the People’s Choice Awards, the comedian broke the record for the most wins yet.

Degeneres already had an impressive 17 People’s Choice Awards before the night began. By the end of the evening, however, she brought that total up to 20.

Ellen DeGeneres People's Choice Awards

Ellen and her wife Portia DeRossi blamed a traffic jam for being late. They barely had enough time to pose on the red carpet.

Here are Ellen DeGeneres’ three new trophies:

  • Favorite Daytime TV Show Host (The Ellen DeGeneres Show)
  • Best Comedic Collaboration (“Britney Spears’ Mall Mischief”)
  • Favorite Animated Movie Voice (Finding Dory)

Giving one acceptance speech is probably nerve-wracking, but Ellen is always in her element. Her third speech of the evening was probably the funniest.

“This is amazing,” she said. “17, I get. 18, sure. 19, I can see that. But 20 is outrageous.” On a more sincere note, she got heartfelt with the fans after that. “This is really something that means more to me than [other awards] because it comes from the people. You are the people who are responsible for me being up here.”

Otherwise, her speech was full of her usual wit and humor. She spoke of her love of mashed potatoes, and touched on organized animal voting (monkeys would be the best for that).

Ellen DeGeneres’ Previous Wins

Ellen won her first People’s Choice Award all the way back in 1995. She won in the Favorite Female Performer in a New TV Series category for her show Ellen. It took her ten more years to win her next one in 2005. Then, she won for Favorite Daytime Talk Show Host for The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which she’s been winning awards for ever since.

Along with Ellen, several other stars hit it big this year at the People’s Choice Awards. Tyler Perry received the humanitarian award, and Ryan Reynolds, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert Downey Jr. and Margot Robbie were all fan favorites with their acting as well.
