When Kendrick Lamar revealed he’d be putting out a new album, everybody predicted it would do well. It had high expectations to live up to. But leave it to Kendrick Lamar to blow those expectations out of the water.
Lamar’s newest album DAMN. was released on April 14, 2017. It was supposed to sell about 530,000 units in the first week, but that ended up being a huge underestimate. Instead, it sold 603,000 units in just one week. Naturally, this landed it a number one debut spot on the Billboard charts.
So far, that makes DAMN. the best selling album of 2017. It’s not too surprising given that two of Lamar’s three previous studio albums also had number one chart debuts. For reference, DAMN. smashed Drake’s hold on 2017. Drake released More Life in March of 2017, and it sold 505,000 units.
It’s not just popular, either–critics also love the new jams. On Metacritic, it wound up receiving an average score of 96, which isn’t too shabby at all. The Guardian gave it a solid 5/5 rating, as did the Telegraph. Rolling Stone was only mildly less favorable, with a 4.5/5.0 rating.
Of course, Kendrick Lamar’s mom is probably the biggest fan. He shared a text she sent him about DAMN., and it’s pretty hilarious.
We can’t agree more.
The DAMN. Tour
Obviously, a good album needs a good tour to go with it. He just wrapped up a couple stellar gigs at Coachella, so it’s time to get fans hyped up again. He’s kicking off the DAMN. tour in July in Arizona. He’s then hitting up the rest of North America along with supporting acts Travis Scott and D.R.A.M. The tour will last about a month, ending in Los Angeles on August 6.
Tickets go on sale on April 28, 2017, but presales start tomorrow, April 25.
