Marvel Has 15th Straight #1 Opening with ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’

There are box office hits, and then there are ongoing monarchies of box office domination. We’re guessing you know where Marvel stands on this spectrum. But in case you had any doubts, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 just became Marvel’s 15th number one box office opening in a row.

Lookin’ good, team.

Over the weekend, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 brought in about $145 million in the United States. Worldwide, so far the new flick has grossed $427.6 million. Naturally, this was the best-performing movie at the box office this week. That’s not surprising at all–but what is surprising is that this is the 15th consecutive Marvel movie to do so.

There have been literally zero flops from Marvel. Heck, there haven’t even been any number two debuts. That means Marvel has consistently smeared the competition for almost ten years. Haters who think the superhero genre is going stale, take note.

The first Guardians of the Galaxy film debuted in 2014. Critics weren’t quite sure how it would do, considering it was a one-off and not based on the highly popular characters like Thor, Iron Man and Captain America. Yet the comedy shone all on its own. It ended up earning $773 million worldwide at the box office. Of course, merchandise sales for things like toys and clothing definitely upped the movie’s profitability.

Guardians of the Galaxy even managed to earn two Oscar nominations, which is somewhat of a rare feat for superhero movies. Both were for visuals–Makeup and Hairstyling and Best Achievement in Visual Effects.

There’s no telling how Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will fare at the Oscar level. But it’s already looking like it’s going to pass up the first one in the finance area. Plus, critics have given it an 81% certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while fans have given it a 90% thumbs up. Not too shabby for the 15th Marvel movie to hit theaters.
