There’s nothing like finding out one of your favorite gaming systems just celebrated its 20th anniversary to make you feel old. Thankfully, when thinking about the Nintendo 64, our fond memories of all the games make us feel like kids again.
The Nintendo 64 had its official release in the United States on September 26, 1996. As the first 3D Nintendo system, the Nintendo 64 was absolutely mind-blowing for kids (and adults) everywhere. Storylines that were formerly reduced to 16-bit flatness finally seemed to come into their own with expansive worlds to match the epic plots.
Despite only selling 33 million units in comparison to Sony Playstation’s 105.5 million units, many of the Nintendo 64 games have become classics. Here are a few of our favorites:
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
This is the game responsible for turning many people on to the Legend of Zelda franchise. With a massive world to explore, beautiful storylines and innovative combat gameplay, it still tops many people’s lists of favorite games.
Super Mario 64
“It’s-a me, Mario!” Super Mario 64 had all the fun of an open world system with some of the classic elements from the 2D Mario games, like breaking blocks open by jumping into them.
Star Fox 64
It seemed like everyone who owned a Nintendo 64 had Star Fox. This was a new take on a scrolling shooter game, where you controlled the aircrafts of Fox McCloud and his pals as they journeyed through the Lylat system. This was the first Nintendo 64 game to use the Rumble Pak.
All the classic Nintendo characters, including, Mario, Luigi, Yoshi and Peach, raced around in go-karts while throwing banana peels at each other. What’s not to love?
This first-person shooter game let people step into the role of James Bond. The multiplayer modes were particularly fun to play with friends.
The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask
We’re Zelda fans, so we had to include a second one on the list. Majora’s Mask may look innocent on first glance, but it wound up being one of the creepier Legend of Zelda titles. However, the race against time in the world of Termina holds a haunting place in people’s hearts.
