When it comes to car stunts, fans take their love of racing and explosions very seriously. That explains why the eighth Fast and the Furious movie, The Fate of the Furious, just obliterated worldwide box office records.
The Fate of the Furious opened this weekend, and the amount of money it’s already made is borderline ridiculous. Its take domestically was $98.8 million, which in itself is decent, but nothing special. That’s the 44th biggest domestic opening ever. But the worldwide numbers were way more impressive.
Total worldwide, The Fate of the Furious grossed $531 million. That’s over half a billion dollars in just one weekend. That’s the absolute biggest weekend opening of any movie EVER. Astonishingly, it even beat the opening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which opened to $521 million in 2015.
However, there’s a chance The Force Awakens would have opened to a bigger box office take. It’s release was delayed by a month in China, whereas The Fate of the Furious landed in all 63 international markets at once.
So Long, Jurassic World Record!
In terms of international openings, the newest Fast and Furious flick totally destroyed records. It made $433.2 million overseas, beating the previous record holder, Jurassic World, by over $115 million.
What’s even more impressive is that The Fast and the Furious franchise has been going for over 16 years with no signs of slowing down. There are already two more installments planned for 2019 and 2021.
The Fate of the Furious stars Vin Diesel, who has been a part of the franchise since the very beginning. Jason Statham, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Charlize Theron and Kurt Russell also star. Critically, it received a 66% fresh rating from Rotten Tomatoes, but fans are ranking it higher at an 81% approval rate.
