Tom Brady Lands on Madden NFL GOAT Edition Cover

We can’t all be NFL superstars. But since the first Madden NFL video game came out in the 1990s, we can get pretty darn close. The Madden games let people compete as the best players and teams around. It therefore seems like a natural fit for Tom Brady to grace the cover of the 18th iteration.

Brady just won his fifth Super Bowl ring this year, which is no small feat. So when it came to picking someone for the new GOAT edition of Madden, it was a no brainer. The fact that Brady grew up near Electronic Arts and even worked out at the EA gym made it even a better fit.

“When this all came about, I thought, ‘How cool is that to do this, knowing when I was a kid in high school I was tagging along down there, working out where it all started?'” Brady said. “It’s been such a great game over a long period of time. I played it so much when I was younger, a little less now. My son Jack loves beating up on me.”

The Curse?

Unfortunately, the one bad thing about nabbing this cover is the supposed curse. Apparently there’s a history of the cover stars getting severely injured, which started with the first game in 1999. On that edition, Garrison Hearst of the San Francisco 49ers took the honor–and then broke his ankle right after.

Last year’s Madden cover star was Rob Gronkowski, another Patriots star. He wound up missing the postseason entirely due to injury. However, Brady isn’t attributing this to any curse.

“I don’t think Gronk’s ever been cursed by anything,” he said. “He’s in pretty good shape. I suppose there’s been some reality to that curse over the years. Hopefully I can break it. That would be pretty cool.”

In the meantime, Tom Brady can chill out with some video games.
